Organic Vitamins and Herbal Supplements
Organic vitamins and organic herbal supplements are produced from plants that were grown in an organic environment. This means that the foods used to product the vitamins have not been exposed to the harmful effects of herbicides and pesticides.
Why Is Organic Important?
There are a couple of concerns when pesticides and herbicides are used to during the growth of plants.
First, if the plants are sprayed with chemicals, those chemicals will either remain on the surface of the food, or be absorbed into the food. Absorption is particularly a problem if the soil has been chemically treated, as the plant will draw the chemicals in through the roots. No amount of washing will remove those chemicals.
Second, chemicals that are applied to the soil will kill the microbiotic activity in the soil that makes nutrients absorbable by the plant and subsequently by humans when they eat the plants. It’s the microbiotics in the soil that convert non-organic matter into matter that is bio-available (that can be absorbed by living organisms). Plants grown in chemically treated soil have fewer minerals and other beneficial compounds than plants grown organically.
Why Does This Matter For Organic Vitamins?
Organic vitamins and herbal supplements are produced from whole foods, but these whole foods may have traces of chemicals, or be devoid of beneficial compounds that were destroyed due to soil treatments. This means the organic vitamins might be contaminated with chemicals and might have fewer beneficial minerals and other nutrients.
When possible, always choose herbal vitamins that have been grown organically.
